FAQs
What are Custom Mouth Guards?
Custom mouth guards are dental devices designed to fit the unique contours of an individual's mouth. They are used to protect teeth from the effects of grinding or clenching during sleep, a condition known as bruxism.
How long does it take to get my mouth guard after I place my order?
Due to the custom nature of our product, your mouth guards will arrive approximately two weeks after we receive your impression kit back at Remi HQ.
What if my mouth guard does not fit?
At Remi we are 100% committed to providing the perfect mouth guard for you. That’s why we have a 45-night guarantee. If you are unhappy for any reason, just let us know and we will make it right.
If I am a heavy grinder, can I get a thicker mouth guard?
Yes, you can choose between 1mm, 1.3mm or 2mm thickness on the customer info card included in your impression kit.
Do I need top AND bottom mouth guards? Can I get two of the same kind?
You only need to wear one – either a top or a bottom. Not both. We believe the best way to know your preference on top vs bottom guards is to try them both, which is why every customer gets a top and bottom guard by default. If you already know your preference, just let us know and we are happy to make you two of the same kind!
How do custom mouth guards work?
Custom mouth guards work by creating a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth. This prevents the wear and tear that can occur from teeth grinding or clenching, thereby protecting the enamel and reducing the risk of tooth damage and other oral health issues.
What materials are used in making custom mouth guards?
Custom mouth guards are typically made from BPA-free, dental-grade materials. They often consist of a hard-soft plastic combination, ensuring durability on the outside and comfort on the inside.
How do I choose the right type of custom mouth guard for me?
The choice of a custom mouth guard depends on the severity of your teeth grinding and your comfort preferences. Options range from slimmer profile mouth guards for light grinding to thicker mouth guards for severe grinding.
How do I get a custom mouth guard?
To get a custom mouth guard, you can order an impression kit online from a provider. After taking your dental impressions at home, you send them back to the company, which then manufactures the mouth guard to fit your mouth precisely.
Can I use a custom mouth guard if I have TMJ disorder?
While mouth guards are designed to alleviate the symptoms of teeth grinding and clenching, mouth guards can and do help some people with their TMJ symptoms.
How do I clean and care for my custom mouth guard?
Maintaining good hygiene for your custom mouth guard is crucial to prevent bacteria buildup, odors, and potential oral health issues. There are two recommended methods for cleaning your mouth guard effectively:
- Ultrasonic Cleaning - Using an ultrasonic cleaner, like the one offered by Remi, is the most thorough and efficient way to clean your mouth guard.
- Manual Cleaning - If you don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, you can manually clean your mouth guard by rinsing it with warm water after each use.
Regardless of the cleaning method, always allow your custom mouth guard to air dry completely before storing it in a clean, well-ventilated case. Proper care and regular cleaning will help extend the lifespan of your mouth guard and maintain optimal oral hygiene.
How long does a custom mouth guard last?
The lifespan of a custom mouth guard varies depending on the material and the severity of teeth grinding. On average, a mouth guard can last up to 3-12 months, but it may need replacement more or less frequently depending on wear.
What is the cost of a custom mouth guard?
The cost of a custom mouth guard can vary widely, typically ranging from $100 to $700, depending on the provider and the type of guard. Online providers often offer them at a lower cost than dental offices as they cut out the middleman.
Is it necessary to wear a mouth guard on both the top and bottom teeth?
No, it is not necessary to wear a mouth guard on both the top and bottom teeth. Most people find comfort and protection with a mouth guard on just one arch. However, you can choose which one feels best for you, and some providers offer both to allow for personal preference and the option to use the mouth guard set to whiten their teeth while protecting from grinding.
Can a custom mouth guard help with snoring or sleep apnea?
Custom mouth guards are primarily designed to protect against teeth grinding and clenching. While some types of oral appliances can help with snoring or sleep apnea by adjusting the position of the jaw or tongue, custom mouth guards are not specifically designed for this purpose.
